2) S.Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital, Bologna, Italy

With more than 400 years of history, The Bologna University Hospital Authority St. Orsola-Malpighi Polyclinic was the first hospital in Bologna and today is home to the School of Medicine and Surgery. The Polyclinic is an internationally acclaimed institution for the study and treatment of pathologies and each year organizes medical conferences and conventions attended by professionals of international fame.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor Michele Baccarani

Preceptorships at Bologna will last for 4 weeks.

3) Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France

The third largest university hospital in France, the Bordeaux University Hospital comprises three hospital facilities located within the urban community. Closely related to the University Segalen Bordeaux 2, they participate consistently in medical training, as well as basic research.  Through its research activities Bordeaux Seglan University contributes to the major scientific and medical breakthroughs of the 21st century with over 100 research programs being implemented in collaboration with national and international research institutions. CML patients are treated at the Bergonie Institute, a center of excellence in the fight against cancer. The Institute has a sphere of medical expertise and advanced medical technology at the forefront of innovation to meet the needs of modern oncology and haematology. The aim of the Institute Bergonie is to improve and provide comprehensive and continuing patient care.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor Francois-Xavier Mahon

Preceptorships at CHU de Bordeaux will last for 4 weeks.

4) City of Hope, California, USA

City of Hope is an independent research center, established in 1913, that is an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network). The Department of Hematology/HCT has one of the largest and most successful transplant programs in the United States. In addition, there is a strong Phase 1/New Drug Development program that oversees clinical trials for new therapeutic agents for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Drs. Ravi Bhatia and David Snyder are Co-Chairs of the CML Committee for City of Hope. Dr. Bhatia has a full time laboratory program studying leukemic stem cells. The Molecular Hematopathology Laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Qin Huang, performs quantitative PCRs for BCR-ABL.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor David Snyder

Preceptorships at City of Hope will last for 3 to 4 weeks.

5) The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, USA

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is one of the world's most respected cancer centers and is often ranked as the best cancer hospital in the USA. The faculty numbers ~947 M.D.s and Ph.D.s with a total staff of more than 12,000. In its 469-bed hospital it treats ~60,000 cancer patients per year of whom approximately 11,000 participate in clinical trials of new therapies, the largest such program in the U.S. The institution currently spends more than $250 million per year in research and ranks first in the number of cancer-related grants awarded nationwide by the National Cancer Institute.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor Jorge Cortes

Preceptorships at the MD Anderson will last for 3 to 4 weeks.

6) The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool, UK

Liverpool is a vibrant city in the North-West of England. The largest hospital is the centrally located Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which houses most specialist services for about 2.3 million people. The regional BMT and leukaemia service are in the Haematology department, run by 6 specialists in haematological oncology and 2 in thombosis/haemostasis, with excellent relations with nearby haematologist colleagues. Outpatients and related multidisciplinary clinical meetings are held several times a week. Immunophenotyping and molecular monitoring are carried out for almost all the region. Our research interests include mechanisms of resistance to imatinib and the newer drugs, and also the immune response to CML. We are one of the biggest UK recruiters into national and commercial clinical trials.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor Richard Clark

Preceptorships in Liverpool will last for 3 to 4 weeks.

7) Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK

The Hammersmith Hospital, long famous for its research achievements, is now incorporated into the Academic Health Science Centre which is part of Imperial College London. It has a large faculty of active research and clinical investigators and a major population of medical students. The Department of Haematology was established more than 50 years ago and now has a long-standing special interest (amongst others) in chronic myeloid leukemia. The Hammersmith is home to the West London Renal and Transplant Centre, two large cancer treatment centres and a specialist cardiac service with a 24/7 primary angioplasty centre.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor Jane Apperley

Preceptorships at the Hammersmith will last for 3 weeks.

8) Hospital Universitario de la Princesa, Madrid, Spain

Queen Isabel II laid the first stone of the Hospital de la Princesa, in 1852 in downtown Madrid. Since its foundation, the history of the Hospital has been associated with hematology. The Hematology Department was one of the Spanish pioneers in bone marrow transplantation and in the modern pharmacologic therapy of CML, introduced by Dr Juan Luis Steegmann. Maintaining a leadership position in bone marrow transplantation, it is also the hub of the Spanish Registry in CML and the leading center of the Region Madrid CML Group. A member of the European leukemia Net, the Hospital de la Princesa is the Spanish node of a continuing networking effort with outstanding research centers. Being a hospital located in the very center of Madrid, our spirit is to propel collaborative research efforts. Beneath this vision, the ERSAP Preceptorship Program of our center will include clinical, cytogenetic and molecular training.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead: Professor Juan Luis Steegmann

Preceptorships at the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa will last for 4 weeks.

9) Oregon Health and Science University Knight Cancer Institute (OHSU), Portland, USA

The National Cancer Institute designated the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute as a Clinical Cancer Center in 1997. The 200 members of the center seek to develop innovative, less toxic and more effective strategies of cancer prevention, treatment, diagnosis and control by applying new discoveries in cancer cell biology in molecular genetics. Programs in cancer prevention and control, hormonal and reproductive malignancies, hematologic malignancies, experimental therapeutics, cancer biology, and complementary medicine function to foster interdisciplinary interactions between basic and clinical researchers. Professor Brian Druker is the director of the Knight Cancer institute at OHSU.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program leads - Professor Brian Druker and Associate Professor Michael Mauro

Preceptorships at OHSU will last for approximately 4 weeks.

10) Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, USA

Through Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) seek to speed the transfer of new diagnostic and treatment techniques from the research setting to patient care. This highly integrated approach supports the flow of scientific information among researchers, clinicians and patients, thus speeding the development of new cancer treatments. Part of the FHCRC, the Radich laboratory studies the molecular genetics of response, progression, and relapse in human leukemia. Research topics include the detection of minimal residual disease, dissecting the role of signal transduction abnormalities in leukemia, and constructing gene expression profiles of response and progression.

ERSAP Preceptorship Program lead - Professor Jerry Radich

Preceptorships at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will last for 3-4 weeks.
