World CML Day on 9/22: Hematologists and patient organisations around the world raise awareness of CML

September 2013 - World CML Day on 22nd September raises public awareness about the needs of patients living with CML. Following the motto "all united, all unique", World CML Day reminds us that a close collaboration between scientists, clinicians and patient organisations is key to improving the outcomes for patients with CML around the world.

To celebrate the day numerous events and initiatives are being organised by leukaemia patient associations around the world. Hematologists and medical associations in different regions will conduct educational programs and also work closely with patient organisations on various key initiatives including seminars, book launches, awards, bike rides, media campaigns and much more.

As an example of physician events, the Indian Society of Medical & Paediatric Oncology (ISMPO) will organise a CME program on CML at the Jodhpur Medical College in conjunction with the iCMLf on the eve of World CML Day on 21 Sept 2013. Local physicians will be updated on the latest advances in the management of CML during expert lectures and case-based panel discussions. More than 50 physicians have been invited to join the event. The medical education program also aims to educate general practitioners and peripheral clinicians on the minimum requirements for diagnosis and the mandatory monitoring once a therapy has been initiated. "This reflects one of the key priorities of the Indian oncology and haematology academic organizations", says Dr. Hemant Malhotra, Professor of Medicine & Head of Medical Oncology Division at the SMS Medical College Hospital in Jaipur, the Program Director of the CME.
2013 is the third year Word CML Day has been recognised as a global event. So far more than 2,300 individuals from 57 countries have signed the World CML Day proclamation and more than 240 photos have been submitted as "Faces of CML". Video testimonials of patients from all world regions provide an impression of what World CML Day means to the patient community.
