17th Annual John Goldman Conference on CML in Estoril: Biology and Therapy

    JGM2015 Entrance

From October 1-4, 2015 584 clinicians and researchers from 59 countries gathered for the 17th John Goldman Conference to discuss latest findings in the biology and management of CML.

This conference co-sponsored by the iCMLf and the European School of Haematology is also a great opportunity for the CML community to network and exchange experiences and perspectives: “This premier CML meeting usually offers an exciting CML focused scientific program of high-value, but the most important part of this conference are the discussions with other CML experts united in their effort to develop better treatment and care for patients with CML”, said Jorge Cortes during his opening remarks of the congress.  Professor Cortes chaired the meeting together with Professor Tessa Holyoake and Professor Tim Hughes.

The top-class scientific program included various special lectures, scientific sessions, a scientific debate and a workshop for non-clinical scientists on genomic editing. In addition, two satellite symposia were held on improving perspectives for patients with CP-CML and individualising therapy in CML beyond the guidelines. The sessions were well attended with over 250 participants in the main hall. Topics during the scientific sessions included; top scoring abstracts 2015, stem cells, autophagy, apoptosis and epigenetics, the biology of blast phase CML, immunology of CML, the mechanisms of resistance, new drugs and new targets, monitoring, evolving concepts in safety of TKI’s and clinical trials.

The interactive part of the conference included mentored poster walks featuring posters on the biology and treatment of CML. The authors, among them many young scientists from all parts of the world, presented their research results followed by a moderated discussion. “It was an honour for me to present my data here at this well-known conference and to discuss the results with the international CML community”, said
Dr Babatunde Adeagbo from Ife Ife in Nigeria.

A list of all abstracts presented during the brief oral communications and the mentored clinical and biology poster walks are available online here.
