Professor Charles Schiffer

Charles Schiffer is Emeritus Professor of Oncology and Medicine at Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, USA.  He served as Director of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Multidisciplinary Program and led the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship for 15 years. 

He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed internal medicine and hematology/oncology training at NYU and the Baltimore Cancer Research Center, National Cancer Institute. 

Charles Schiffer has been instrumental in clinical trial design and treatment advances for leukemia, especially CML and AML as well as platelet and granulocyte transfusion.  He chaired the Leukemia Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B and the Oncology Drug Advisory Committee of the FDA. 

He has published over 350 scientific papers and 80 chapters and served on the editorial boards of major hematology journals.

He received an ASH Mentor Award in 2024 for his lasting impact in training hematologists, the Dr. John J. Kenney Award from the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of America and the Celgene Award for Career Achievement in Hematology.  He has received numerous teaching awards from the School of Medicine and was elected to and served as President of the Academy of Scholars of Wayne State University, the highest recognition accorded to academic faculty at the University.
