Professor Jorge Cortes

Jorge Cortes, M.D. is Director of the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University in the USA. Before joining the Georgia Cancer Center in 2019, he spent 23 years at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas, most recently as Professor of Medicine and Deputy Chair at the Department of Leukemia, where he directed the CML and AML programs.

He earned his medical degree from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City and completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Jorge Cortes is widely known for his clinical research in CML and other myeloid malignancies and has helped lead numerous global clinical trials.

Professor Jorge Cortes is one of the co-founders of the iCMLf and the current iCMLf Chairman. With his impressive track record in CML leadership, research and patient management, he brings a wealth of experience to this role.

He has authored over 1,000 scientific publications and serves on the editorial boards of several oncology journals. Dr Cortes has received numerous awards including the iCMLf Goldman Prize in 2018, the Michael J. Keating Outstanding Achievement Award from SOHO in 2023, and the Distinguished Faculty Award, Medical College of Georgia in 2025. He is also de inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Blood Global Hematology.
