As the final two preceptors in 2011 leave from Brazil and the Ukraine traveling to the Hammersmith Hospital in London, the iCMLf is pleased to announce that the 2012 program is open for applications. The Emerging Regions Support and Partnership (ERSAP) Preceptorship Program is designed for clinicians from emerging economic regions with a specific interest in the treatment of CML and a significant CML patient load. The program enhances clinical knowledge and skills in the treatment of CML through preceptorships at internationally renowned CML centres. The ERSAP Preceptorship Program application form and overview brochure are available for download now. Alternatively contact nicola.evans@cml-foundation.org for further information.
22 September 2011 is a very special date for patients affected by Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), a rare blood cancer that has played a key role in the path towards personalized medicine in cancer. For the first time, patient advocacy groups from all continents will celebrate "International CML Awareness Day" on that date. Patient organisations of the CML Advocates Network from 49 countries, supported by The Max Foundation, Alianza Latina and the International CML Foundation, call on caregivers, healthcare professionals, government and industry to work together to improve on timely access to diagnosis, treatment and care.
Improving access to diagnostics is one of the most challenging issues to address on a large scale. Through small grants and partnerships with CML centres of excellence the ERSAP Diagnosis and Testing Program plans to enable centres in emerging regions to increase their local capacity to conduct diagnostic and long term monitoring of their CML patients. We hope that, for the first time in many cases, physicians will be able to locally confirm the diagnosis of CML patients, leading to better treatment and long term care. This has the potential to dramatically alter the lives of the patients and their families, in some cases whole communities.
Each year the iCMLf cosponsor an international CML meeting with the European School of Haematology (ESH). This meeting is entirely focused on the biology and treatment of CML.
In 2011 the 13th International Conference "Chronic Myeloid Leukemia - Biology and Therapy" will be held in Estoril Portugal from the 22-25 September 2011.
The "CML Advocates Network", the worldwide platform of patient groups supporting patients and relatives suffering from CML, and the iCMLf join forces to support young patients affected by CML, as well as physicians and researchers. The project, launched on International Childhood Cancer Day on 15 February 2011, will encompass a range of activities to support sharing of experience of parents and young patients as well as physicians treating children with CML. Read our Press Release, or enter the Pediatric CML section of this website.
The activities of the iCMLf are supporting healthcare professionals to access knowledge, skills and tools in order to achieve the best possible outcomes, especially in regions where this assistance is most needed. As a charitable foundation, this is only possible through unrestricted grants and donations. We are grateful for the first private donations that have reached us. Please donate, we appreciate your support!
In addition, for 2011, the iCMLf is very pleased to recognise Novartis Oncology and Bristol Myers-Squibb as a Premium Sponsors, Ariad as Major Sponsor, and The Max Foundation for sponsoring the Virtual Education Program. We are grateful for all support that enables us to support better care for CML patients.
To share and enhance best practice management of CML the iCMLf has opened a discussion forum where experts and interested clinicians can discuss difficult, or interesting CML patient cases. Clinicians submit a brief history of the patient and the case for discussion (no more than 200 words) to the iCMLf web-site coordinator, Jan Geissler. Each case accepted will be published in the discussion forum with a brief response. Further comments, questions and discussion are invited.
"How did we ever do this before we had the Internet?” springs to mind when looking at international networks like the iCMLf, the European Leukemia Net or the CML Advocates Network. The Internet has become indispensable to share knowledge, collaborate and communicate globally. Despite CML being a rare disease, experts on all continents collaborate very closely to improve CML treatment. This worldwide community of hematologists is a perfect example for the Internet era. The iCMLf website aims to strengthen that community collaboration further.
