The 22nd of September is recognised by the CML community as International CML Awareness Day. This year 22nd September fell during the iCMLf-ESH International CML meeting: Biology and Therapy. Over 450 hematologists, scientists and patient advocates met in Baltimore, USA to discuss the latest advances in CML science, therapy and care. International CML Awareness Day was marked by Professor Jorge Cortes during his opening presentation on 9/22, recognizing the importance of the close collaboration between scientists, clinicians and patients to continue the dramatic progress made treating CML. On the day, patient organisations in more than 30 countries celebrated International CML Awareness Day with various initiatives.
The iCMLf invites physicians from emerging economic regions to submit abstracts outlining the successful implementation of projects that have improved their management of CML. Selected abstracts will be awarded an iCMLf grant of up to US$5,000.
Many hospitals in developing countries do not have the capability to confirm the diagnosis of CML either by cytogenetics or by molecular tests, which results in patients not being able to access the medication available to enhance and extend their quality of life. Moreover once treatment has started, continued monitoring is essential to detect early evidence of drug resistance, or disease progression, that in many cases could be better managed with a change in therapy.
When the International CML Foundation first started to develop its priorities for the International CML Foundation, their founders thought that education and training for clinicians from the emerging regions would be an area where we could make a substantial impact in a cost-effective manner. The clinical preceptorship program has exceeded all expectations. Read both perspectives of Raghunadharao Digumarti MD (a Preceptor in 2011) and Tim Hughes (an iCMLf host).
The International CML meeting, co-sponsored by the iCMLf and the European School of Heamatology (ESH), is one of the key scientific activities of the iCMLf each year. The program is configured under the guidance of three iCMLf Directors; John Goldman, Jorge Cortes and Tim Hughes. In 2011 the iCMLf-ESH International CML meeting, held in Estoril Portugal, welcomed a record number of participants. Over 460, physicians, scientists and researchers attended from around the globe. While the majority were Europeans, a record number of Americans attended this year. In total one in five attendees crossed the Atlantic to discuss the latest developments in CML.
Clinical reality in CML is in constant change. Thanks to the hard work of clinicians and researchers worldwide, interesting updates about CML diagnostics, treatment and care are constantly published in leading journals. The iCMLf team has now published a new website section on news from CML clinical research, providing you with a selection of interesting new scientific publications on CML. Find the section here. Do you want to suggest a key article that you think all physicians treating CML should be aware about? We welcome your suggestions!
Like every year in December, about 21.000 hematologists and health professionals (as well as a small group of patient advocates) convened at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) to hear latest news from clinical trials. The CML Advocates Network has attended the CML sessions and summarized the key presentations and posters on Nilotinib, Dasatinib, Bosutinib, Ponatinib, DCC-2036, Imatinib-Interferon combination, STOP studies, as well as some studies on CML and diabetes or fatigue, complemented by a patients' perspective. Read the summary of the CML Education Session and the summary of key highlights in the scientific sessions on CML.
During ASH 2011 in San Diego, the iCMLf in partnership with The Max Foundation has held its annual forum on "CML Management in Emerging Regions & Update of the Virtual Education Program". The event was attended by 90 physicians from emerging regions. It provided a valuable networking forum and panel discussion with iCMLf Directors including John Goldman, Jorge Cortes, Jerry Radich, Michele Baccarani, Andreas Hochhaus and Tim Hughes on the challenges and solutions for treating CML in emerging regions. The iCMLf also launched the 2011 update of its "Virtual Education Program", providing new CML educational modules in Spanish, French & English.
